Carers Assessments
A Carer’s Assessment looks at the different ways that your caring role affects your life. This assessment is entirely about you and has no effect on any assessment relating to the person you care for.
Anybody over the age of 18 and caring for another adult is eligible for a carer’s assessment. All carers who could potentially need support, either now or in the future, may receive a carer’s assessment.
You can have an assessment regardless of the following:
- How much or what type of care you provide.
- Your financial situation.
- Whether the person you care for is receiving any help from the local authority.
- Whether you live with the person you care for.
- Whether you care full- or part-time.
- If you share the caring responsibilities with someone else, then you are both entitled to an assessment.
Carer’s assessments are voluntary, so you do not have to have one if you do not wish whilst you may still access any of our other services.

A Carer’s Assessment is about you and your needs as a carer. It has no effect on any assessments relating to the person you care for.
The Carer’s Assessment will identify what your needs on and tailor any support to meet your needs.
Some examples of this support could be:
- A short break from your caring role.
- Somebody to assist with household tasks.
- Membership of a local gym.
- Training to support you in your caring role.
- A referral to a local support group.
- Technology to assist you such as a mobile phone, tablet or computer.
- Advice about other services and financial support you are entitled to such as benefits.
The assessment will likely be conducted over the phone with one of our carers support team, though home visits may be necessary in certain circumstances. A member of the team will gauge your needs through asking questions such as:
- What caring tasks do you undertake and how do you feel about doing them?
- What is your relationship with the person you care for like?
- Do you get enough time for yourself – for example, to meet other people and take part in leisure activities?
- How caring is affecting your mental and physical health?
- How caring is affecting your relationships with others?
- How caring is affecting your ability to access education and work life?
- Whether the person you care for is getting enough help?
- How willing or able are you to carry on caring – what about your own health needs?
- What would help make things easier for you?
Do not worry if you find it difficult to answer some of these questions, our staff are very understanding and will make the process as easy as possible.
Once the assessment has been completed, we will put together a support plan for you and if budgetary approval is needed then will contact you to arrange payment.
If you care for someone under 18 years old then you are entitled to a Parent Carer Needs Assessment. For further information see our Parent Carer page
You can email parent.carers@sefton.gov.uk or give us a call on 0151 288 6060 and request to speak to somebody from the Parent Carer Team.
